Title: Running 102: Monrovia

I am a press feeder Operator (printing) at Monarch Litho Inc. in Montebello. I joined the ASP running Academy in January 2011 as an assistant coach for the half marathon training class. I began running as part of a cross country team at Bosco Tech High School. I usually averaged a 7:30 pace. I have run eight half marathons averaging 1hr 50 min. I have also run four marathons at an average time of 4 hrs. My running philosophy is you must have a positive attitude. Any negative thoughts will make running more difficult than what it is. “Have Fun!”
Your training will follow a standard training pyramid which will go as follows:

BASE BUILDING/ENDURANCE training for the first 3 weeks. At this level you will be begin to work on a good base of running. You will be running slowly with the sole purpose of training your body to endure the constant pounding of running long distances. Towards the end of this first phase we will cover step by step the basics rules of running biomechanics.

STRENGTH training will occur in weeks 4-6. In this stage you will be introduced to longer sustained running and short 20 second surges of quicker paced running. Finally in this stage you will practice the techniques on running mechanics covered in the first stage.

SPEED training takes place during weeks 7-9. As you become more comfortable running at this level this is the perfect time to introduce drills which will assist in speed training on the track.

PEAKING in week 10 &11 will provide you the confidence to run your 10k with the utmost efficiency. At this level you will feel strong, confident and ready,

TAPERING in week 12 may be one of the most important sessions. This is the final week but your training is not yet complete. Now it is time to rest and allow your body to repair itself from the past 11 weeks of training. During this week you will be cutting down the time on the road and by race day you will be like a “race horse in the starting gate.”

Title: Running 102: Fountain Valley

Jeoff started running recreationally back in his college days and completed numerous 5K's/10's. After taking some time off, he decided to get back into it and trained himself once again for the standard 5K/10K's, but this time he moved on to the half-marathon distance (10+) and then the full-marathon (5). Those to him were the most satisfying races, but the most humbling. His mantra is respect the distance and put in the time and effort necessary. One of his favorite quotes is as Vince Lombardi said, "the only place where "Success" comes before "Work" is in...the dictionary".

Title: Running 101, 102, 201: Monrovia

Jose feels coaching is a very fulfilling position because there is no better feeling than seeing someone who at first thought they were not a strong enough runner to finish a 5k accomplishment their goals. He currently runs to maintain his fitness level to participate in running events like 5k's, 10k's and Half Marathons. Jose has been running seriously since 2007 when he ran the Nike Run Hit-Remix at the Colosseum. Before that he was using running as a way to warm up before he started a physical activity like Martial Arts, Softball, Basketball and weight lifting. Right now his short term goal is to get a Triple Crown Medal in 2013 for running three Rock n Roll Half Marathons. His long term goal is to some day run a Full Marathon. Jose feels that you get out of your fitness what you put into it, in other words, go strong or go home.

Title: Running 101, 102: Brea

David "Coach Dave" Griffin joined A Snail's Pace in Brea as a volunteer coach in December 2011 before assuming the RA 101 coaching duties in April 2012. Dave began running in high school back in 1983 and never looked back. Over the years, he has raced in several distances, including several marathons, but the 5K is his favorite. He loves the opportunity to coach beginner and veteran runners in an effort to give something back to the sport. Dave's philosophy of running is the belief that there's room for everybody in our sport and everyone's reason for running is equally important. Most of all, Dave cares about the sport as well as everyone he has the opportunity and pleasure of coaching. When he's not coaching, he's most likely racing somewhere!

Title: Running 102: Mission Viejo

Janet has been running since she was 14 years old and ran both high school track and x-country. Running has always given her a sense of purpose, accomplishment and contentment. She enjoys running for many reasons but mostly she enjoys the camaraderie of running in a group.

At this point in her life, she wants to give back to others what running has given to her. Janet hopes as a coach she can instill a sense of being healthy, happy and a sense of balance in an individual’s life. Janet's philosophy is, we are all busy with many obligations and commitments but we must find a few hours of week for ourselves….I hope my enthusiasm and love of running rubs off on all the athletes I coach.
